Young Ones is just your garden variety reimagining of Bresson’s Au Hasard Balthazar as a post-apocalyptic, elegiac 1970s revisionist sci-fi western Greek tragedy with Biblical overtones, starring a robot flatbed as the donkey, a bunch of current and former child actors as the French brats, and featuring Michael Shannon as Mercedes McCambridge from Giant. Also, I’m not kidding. That’s really the movie, and aside from a clunky performance or overwrought story beat here and there, it’s a glorious hit of post-Tarantino cinematic ether.
